Travel Resources

There are thousands of resources available online to help you plan your next trip - these are some of the few that I like to use when I'm getting ready to go abroad. I recommend them because they continuously provide great deals and they're user friendly. I don't receive a commission from any of these companies - the links are only provided for your convenience.

Airfare

This is a great flight search engine that makes travel planning easier. The site compares hundreds of flights from different airlines, helping you find the cheapest deal. Their calendar also lets you see what days are the cheapest to fly. I typically use Kayak as my starting point for any trip planning!

Momondo is another great flight search engine. One of my favorite features is the "take me anywhere" button, which gives you travel inspiration and allows you to find the cheapest flight. They also compare a wider range of airlines than some of the other booking sites.

Accommodation

I frequently user Airbnb while traveling abroad for an extended period of time as it allows you to rent out entire homes and apartments for a great price. Just one example, I stayed three blocks away from the Colosseum in Rome in a 3-bedroom apartment for only $105 a night!

This is a fantastic option if you're looking to save money while traveling. You can stay in dormitories or private rooms for extremely low prices. There are tons of reviews for most of the hostels, which help you get a good sense of the hostel's location, cleanliness, and staff.

I typically use Booking.com when I am traveling for shorter periods of time or if I need a place to stay last minute. They often have low rates on hotels, a wide selection to choose from and no booking fees.

Travel Gear

Picture
REI is my favorite place to shop for both traveling and camping gear. Their prices aren't cheap, but their products are made to last. I highly recommend becoming a lifetime member for $20 and shopping during their Garage Sales to get awesome discounted gear (only available for co-op members). During the last REI Garage Sale, I got a $400 tent for half the price!

Travel insurance is a must if you're going abroad - particularly if you're going to developing countries! World Nomads has great customer service and will have you covered if things don't go as planned. Their website is also highly user friendly and allows you to get coverage within minutes - it's worth every penny.

I prefer to use Lonely Planet guidebooks when I'm traveling as they have great recommendations for activities, tours, bars, accommodations, restaurants, and more! They also provide interesting insights into the history of the country and tips on how to stay safe and healthy. I frequently use Lonely Planet when putting together my travel itineraries.
